Discussions revolved around the following key issues:

Stigmatisation in Communities

There continues to be a stigma surrounding mental health, particularly among men, making it difficult for individuals to express their emotions openly.

Lack of Confidential Support

Many South Asian communities face barriers to accessing confidential mental health support. While some progress has been made with initiatives such as ‘walking groups’ and ‘Tea and Chat’ sessions in community cafes, more support is needed.

Overlooking Young People's Mental Health

The mental health and well-being of young people are often overlooked and denied by elders, leading to a lack of communication between parents and children. Limited or non-existent support from religious institutions and community bodies also adds to this problem.

Lack of Culturally Appropriate Services

The South Asian community still lacks appropriate services to meet their religious and cultural needs. Decision-makers need to listen directly to grassroots communities instead of relying solely on community leaders who may be out of touch, especially among young men and women.
